Many families enthrone a picture or statue of the Sacred Heart in a place of honor through a special ceremony. Enthronement honors Jesus as the King and Lord of the home, and the family pledges to serve Him in loving obedience to His commandments.

What will convert America and save the
world? “My answer is prayer. What we need
is need is for every parish to come before Jesus in the Blessed Sacrament in Holy Hours of prayer.”
Some saints have so touched people that they are known not by the formal names used in canonization, but by familiar, affectionate titles such as: The Little Flower, Mother Cabrini, Padre Pio. And so it is with St. John-Baptist Mary Vianney, universally called The Cure of Ars. This amazing priest is a prime example of St. Paul’s observation that God chooses the weak to shame the strong (1Cor.1:27-29).
Holy and humble, John longed to be a priest, but struggled with his studies, almost unable to digest the minimum knowledge needed for ordination. God, however, supplied the inspiration and used John’s intense holiness to transform him into a priest sorely needed at his time. The ravages of the French Revolution had caused the falling away of many priests and the indifference of others.
With some reluctance on the part of his
superiors, John was ordained in 1815
because his evident piety outweighed
his limitations. He was assigned to the
remote village of Ars, where the faith had
been abandoned. Soon the village was
transformed by his holiness, kindness,
humility and teaching. His reputation as
a preacher and especially as a confessor
drew people from all over.
John spent as many as 17 hours a day
hearing confessions most of his priestly
life. He existed mostly on boiled potatoes and managed to get an hour or so of sleep each day. He could scarcely make his way from the church to his home, with crowds eager to see him, touch him and even snip a scrap from his cassock. At times he scattered religious medals to disperse the crowds and clear a path. He suffered often from the torments of Satan and he took on many penances to lessen the penances he assigned in confession.
Ars became known as a place of physical healings as well as spiritual healings, which John attributed not to himself but to St. Philomena. He worked in partnership with her and said that she would grant a miracle whenever he asked her to. The beloved priest became an example to all priests and is known everywhere. His penitents averaged about 100,000 per year. At the height of his ministry he heard about 300 confessions a day.
This year we observe the 150th anniversary of his death, August 4, 1859. He was beatified in 1905 and canonized May 31, 1925. His incorrupt body lies in a glass coffin in the basilica in Ars.

Our President and Public Officials
Lord, God, Author of Life and Source of Eternal Life:
Move the hearts of all our public officials and especially our President, to fulfill their responsibilities worthily and well to all those entrusted to their care.
Help them in their special leadership roles, to extend the mantle of protection to the most vulnerable, especially the defenseless unborn, whose lives are threatened with extermination by an indifferent society.
Guide all public officials by your wisdom and grace to cease supporting any law that fails to protect the fundamental good that is human life itself, which is a gift from God and parents.

St. John Vianney "spoke of the priesthood as if incapable of fathoming the grandeur of the gift and task entrusted to a human creature: 'O, how great is the priest! ... If he realised what he is, he would die. ... God obeys him: he utters a few words and the Lord descends from heaven at his voice, to be contained within a small host'. Explaining to his parishioners the importance of the Sacraments, he would say: "Without the Sacrament of Holy Orders, we would not have the Lord. Who put Him there in that tabernacle? The priest. Who welcomed your soul at the beginning of your life? The priest. Who feeds your soul and gives it strength for its journey? The priest. Who will prepare it to appear before God, bathing it one last time in the blood of Jesus Christ? The priest, always the priest. And if this soul should happen to die [as a result of sin], who will raise it up, who will restore its calm and peace? Again, the priest. ... After God, the priest is everything! ... Only in heaven will he fully realise what he is'. These words, welling up from the priestly heart of the holy pastor, might sound excessive. Yet they reveal the high esteem in which he held the Sacrament of the Priesthood. He seemed overwhelmed by a boundless sense of responsibility: 'Were we to fully realise what a priest is on earth, we would die: not of fright, but of love. ... Without the priest, the passion and death of our Lord would be of no avail. It is the priest who continues the work of redemption on earth. ... What use would be a house filled with gold, were there no one to open its door? The priest holds the key to the treasures of heaven: it is he who opens the door: he is the steward of the good Lord; the administrator of His goods. ... Leave a parish for twenty years without a priest, and they will end by worshipping the beasts there. ... The priest is not a priest for himself, he is a priest for you.'"
Pro-life Corner: Friday Penance
It is easy to forget that the Church still designates every Friday as a day of penance. Bishop R. Daniel Conlon of the Diocese of Steubenville, OH, has invited his flock “to resume the practice of abstaining from meat on all Fridays throughout the year.” He urged linking this practice with prayer and service, giving witness to the sacredness of human life. Bishop Conlon said that penance can be regarded “as a prayer for life and in reparation for sins against life,” and that this penance can also be a service by offering the financial savings of a simple meatless meal “to the poor or to pro-life efforts.” The late Cardinal John O’Connor of New York likewise urged Friday abstinence in reparation for abortion.

Prayer for Priests Based on this Promise of the Sacred Heart
Sacred Heart of Jesus, Eternal High Priest, let Your love flow into the hearts of Your priests and transform them into living images of You. By Your grace, make them true apostles of Your Sacred Heart. I pray for the fulfillment of the promise You made to St. Margaret Mary: “I will give to priests the gift of touching the most hardened hearts. May Your Kingdom come to the hearts of all through the ministry of holy priests! Amen.

Pray for the Papal
Visit to the U.K.
On September 16 Pope Benedict will begin the first official visit by a Pope to the United Kingdom (England and Scotland). As the historic visit approaches we need to intensify our prayers for the safety and success of this landmark event. The many successful journeys of John Paul II were preceded by intense prayer.
Pope Benedict will visit the U.K. by an invitation of the previous Prime Minister, Gordon Brown. The Pope will be received by Queen Elizabeth at her official Scottish residence in Edinburgh and will offer an open air Mass in Glasgow.
His busy schedule in London includes meeting with the Archbishop of Canterbury at Westminster Abbey and meetings with other churchmen and government officials. He will address the U.K. political and cultural leaders in Westminster Hall, the place where St. Thomas More was tried and condemned. The Pope will offer Holy Mass in Westminster Cathedral (Catholic) and will lead a prayer vigil in Hyde Park.
On Sunday, September 19 he will travel by helicopter to Crofton Park, near Birmingham, to beatify Ven. Cardinal John Henry Newman.
Our Holy Father’s ambitious agenda is signifi-cant far beyond the United Kingdom. It is feared that he will encounter serious opposition. We should always offer daily prayer for the Pope but at this time it is crucial to intensify our prayers and sacrifices for the success of his journey.

Lent is a time when God disturbs
our peace, if it is a false peace. He
said if we do not speak out when the
opportunity is there, it is a false
peace.
He stated ashes on our forehead
say “change.” Ashes remind us that we are dust and to dust we will return. Ashes remind us to change, to be reconciled to God and to see, as God does, what is inside. Without God we are nothing.

St. Joseph, Powerful Patron
of Husbands and Fathers
Some of the problems so rampant today
result from the absence or negligence of
husbands and fathers. St. Joseph
was selected by God for the vital role of devoted husband of Mary and “chosen father” of the Son of God. He is a model of faith, humility, strength, purity, courage, unquestioning submission to God’s plans.
St. Joseph’s intercession and patronage are so important for
+ holy, loving marriages + responsible fatherhood
+ priests and others called to spiritual fatherhood
+ unborn babies and children + widows and orphans
+ workers of every sort. St. Joseph is also invoked for the sick and the dying and for a happy death.
In 1870 Bl. Pius IX declared Joseph patron and guardian of the Universal Church. Countless saints and popes have urged devotion to him. Some have suggested that prayers to Mary should always include Joseph because the two are more closely linked in heaven than they were on earth. Let us seek St. Joseph’s intercession daily, especially for husbands and fathers.

Prison Ministry Shows Compassion for Prisoners
“I was …in prison and you visited Me…”

A valuable Radio Family Rosary
volunteer was at one time incarcerated. Through prison ministry this person met Our Lord. She prayed the rosary with us while she was inside.

Oh, by the bitter anguish thou didst experience upon earth, dry the tears of the venerable Pontiff, defend him, comfort him, intercede for him with the Giver of peace and charity, that, all adversity being removed and all error dissipated, the entire Church may serve God in perfect liberty. Lady of Perpetual Help Parish, Scottsdale,
celebrating its 25th year of Perpetual
Adoration, and St. Joseph’s Parish
celebrating its seventh year.
A priest giving a Mission on the Eucharist recently at Most Holy Trinity Parish appealed to the faithful to include in Rosary intentions: “That more pastors will be open to Perpetual Adoration.” He said Eucharistic Adoration brings joy and peace to the adorers and makes reparation for our sins and the sins of the world.
Bl. John Paul II, who established Perpetual Adoration in the Vatican, said that the course of history can be changed through Eucharistic Adoration in every parish.
